Who We Are

SORCE (Supportive Organic Reflexive Community/Creative Empowerment) is a research-creation collective at T’karonto Metropolitan University and York University with a focus on structural change. Engaging with inclusive and liberatory methods, we seek to bring about grassroots power by engaging in deep philosophical work, moving theory into praxis through community activism and creative means. We seek to build bridges between equity-seeking groups by researching forms of praxis that enable our mutual liberation. Through these allyship practices, we hope to move beyond identity politics to enable broad associations between marginalized people and allies who are building emancipatory methods.

Our Mission

Our collective hosts events, parties, workshops, and skill shares, providing resources and peer mentorship to a) support community engagement and creative praxis in the university setting; b) create a space to discuss emergent methodologies and ethical questions in research-creation and related fields; c) showcase the talent, knowledge, wisdom, and creative outputs of members at ongoing and completed stages; and d) create opportunities for liberation and collaboration that enable links between university departments and the community at large.

We invite masters and doctoral students, artists, and other allies to join our collective, pursuing the aims of mutual-aid and social justice. Sign-up below to be added to the listserv and get invited to our next meeting. We don’t require members to commit to a specific level of participation. Watch, engage, lead — it’s up to you.

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

SORCE is always seeking new collaborators. As a horizontal collective, we do not have a traditional operational structure. Our members operate semi-autonomously while also generating links of mutual care and collaboration. Being a part of the collective means being able to access the collective genius of our members, including the potential for collaboration, support, and knowledge sharing.

It is hoped that all active members will participate in horizontal knowledge-sharing. All new members are invited to propose an offering with support around organization, space booking, and other logistical concerns.
